Metrology scanning is typically used for small equipment, with the laser scanner attached to a tripod. It has a reach of around 3 M and an accuracy of 200 microns. The scan file is typically a mesh file.

Having a point cloud would be useless to many clients if they don’t have the correct software and hardware to turn that information into usable data. SFDesign can not only do the scanning, but we can also turn that scan data into functional 3D geometry.

Reverse Engineering

Reverse engineering (also known as backwards engineering or back engineering) empowers us to understand how a device, process, system, or piece of software accomplishes its tasks with minimal initial insight. This knowledge allows us to repurpose obsolete objects, conduct security analyses, or learn how something works.

The reverse engineering process, specific to each object, involves three basic steps: information extraction, modelling, and review. Information extraction gathers all relevant details, and modelling combines these into an abstract guide for designing new objects or systems. It also reviews and tests the model’s validity. This method applies to computer science, mechanical design, electronics, software, chemical engineering, and systems biology.

Step-1:

The procedure starts with spray coating the object with a temporary matte powder to improve scan accuracy. Even a slightly glossy surface can degrade the scan quality. Similarly, reflective and transparent surfaces cannot be scanned without a matte coating.

Step-2:

Following the coating step, we capture the critical sections of the part using a high-precision 3D scanner. Our experts carefully capture every viewing angle so every scan automatically aligns as the 3-dimensional models unravel.

Step-3:

Once the part is scanned, we use the best software to repair small gaps and simplify the scan, making the data more manageable in CAD. This reduces the model as much as possible without destroying important details.

Step-4:

The data is then imported into CAD software equipped with reverse engineering tools, where it undergoes trimming, fusion, alignment, and polishing

Step-5:

Once the data has gone through all the steps above and converted into a refined design, it is ready to print.
